Mediated Learning and Cognitive Modifiability

Mediated Learning and Cognitive Modifiability

This book presents an extensive and in-depth discussion of theories and research related to Vygotsky’s and Feuerstein’s theories of mediated learning and their effects on learning potential and cognitive modifiability. Most topics are discussed in relation to a broad spectrum of developmental and cognitive research under the conceptual umbrella of mediated learning and cognitive modifiability. Some topics, such as neural plasticity, executive functions, mental rotation, and cognitive education, are indirectly related to mediated learning and are therefore included in this book.

In many respects, the book presents an expansion of Vygotsky’s and Feuerstein’s theories, along with empirical validation across a variety of familial, social, and cultural contexts. It offers a thorough analysis and summary of 50 years of research and methodology concerning the close relationship between mediated learning interactions and cognitive modifiability, as well as the dynamic assessment underlying the measurement of cognitive modifiability.

Special emphasis is placed on the dynamic assessment tools developed by Tzuriel over more than four decades. Tzuriel’s new instruments are integrated into extensive research on interactions between parents and children, mediation by siblings, teachers, and peers, as well as the validation of a dynamic assessment approach and cognitive educational programs aimed at the development of thinking skills and academic achievement.
