Giftedness in a lifespan. It doesn't stop after childhood, does it?!

Doesn't giftedness continue beyond childhood?!

Highly gifted children grow up to become highly gifted adults, who still frequently grapple with the feeling of being different. Many adults restrain themselves due to the perception of being labeled as 'nerds' or standing out from the crowd. However, there remains a scarcity of information tailored to this demographic.

"Ever since my child's suspected giftedness was confirmed, I see myself mirrored in them. Could I possibly be gifted too?

Why can't everything in my life just be 'normal'? People always complain that I'm too serious and can't just act 'normal' like everyone else.

But being gifted, that can't be me, right? I went to a technical secondary school and barely scraped through college. I couldn't possibly be gifted, could I? Yet, I feel so out of place..."

These are common sentiments we often encounter during coaching sessions with adults or initial discussions with gifted children's parents. Uncovering your giftedness later in life often leads to a plethora of self-reflective questions. It offers a unique perspective on your past, your present identity, and the potential paths you could have taken. This introspection can be quite confronting. We aim to explore these questions in our coaching sessions with you and provide insights.

Many adults find facing themselves in this manner quite daunting and tend to initially shy away from the challenge. However, there comes a point where avoidance is no longer an option, and the desire for recognition and validation becomes overwhelming. Often, adults who have recently come to realize their giftedness undergo a process akin to mourning: from initial recognition accompanied by doubt and denial, to awe and acceptance, to appreciation and a sense of integration with their giftedness, and ultimately to embracing it as an integral part of themselves and their identity.
