A game designed to help young people gain insight into their own learning skills (in Dutch).
The Learning Skills Game is published by Hoogbloeier® and was originally developed by Joost de Maaré, first released by Bureau Talent. Due to continued demand for this valuable tool for young people, Hoogbloeier® has decided to reissue the game.
The game includes a set of cards that encourage young people to reflect on their own learning process. It distinguishes three types of learning skills:
- Cognitive skills (e.g., summarising, memorising vocabulary, mind mapping)
- Metacognitive skills (e.g., planning, monitoring, evaluating, and reflecting)
- Affective skills (e.g., handling criticism or self-motivation)
Using these cards and the accompanying tasks, young people discover which skills they already master and which ones they want to strengthen. In doing so, they develop self-awareness and build learning confidence – essential steps for talent development.
The Learning Skills Game can be used in the classroom, during coaching sessions, or in small groups. It encourages dialogue and reflection and aligns with educational goals related to executive functions, learning-to-learn, and self-regulation.
Wijs op Weg
The Learning Skills Game is also part of Wijs op Weg, Hoogbloeier®’s programme designed to address underachievement in gifted and highly gifted students. Within this programme, the game is used in the Self-Regulation module.
